Contributing writer, Fiona Allen, has pulled together a list of some of the best gluten-free dining spots across Edinburgh. This is by no means an exhaustive list but is a good place to start if you are gluten intolerant. It’s good to note that most places, with advanced warning, will be able to create a gluten-free menu or individual dishes for you; simply call ahead. Happy dining!
Manna House
Step inside the elegant cream doors at the Manna House Bakery and you enter a slice of patisserie heaven. The open plan bakery offers over 30 different types of hand-crafted breads and authentic European delicacies, in-store, every day. The wide range of treats include, Madeleines, chocolate twists, an array of croissants, mini Bundt cakes and a range of classic French treats that look like jewels in sweet cases.

Restaurant 21212
Michelin starred, 21212 will be more than happy to accommodate anyone with allergies or intolerances. 21212 appreciates that it is not always easy to tell what is suitable so they kindly ask about any allergies or intolerances when customers are booking ahead.
There is a main dining room on the ground floor, and a small private room seating 10 on the first floor, as well as a “pod” that seats up to 6 people and it’s ideal for a small, intimate celebration.
Any restaurant which is awarded a Michelin star in its first year of opening has to be something special, and 21212 is just that, very special indeed.

Roseleaf Bar Cafe
From the cheerfully jokey tone of its menu, you might be forgiven for thinking that the Roseleaf doesn’t take itself too seriously, however, they are very serious when it comes to the food. Helpfully, each menu notes allergy choices as follows: Vg = vegetarian, G = gluten-free (coeliac), P= pescatarian, V= vegan , D = dairy free, N = contains nuts.
Roseleaf use seasonal, local, sustainable produce wherever possible and can tweak the majority of their dishes for gluten-sensitive guests. Amoungst there tantalising cocktails there is a coeliac/gluten free beer from Estrella. All round, it’s great to see that this quirky spot near the Shore is very serious when it comes to its customers’ needs.

Contini Ristorante
The chocolate cake served at Contini Risterante is Casanova on a plate: smooth, rich, dark, Italian, and wickedly irresistible; we are smitten! Fortunately, it’s also gluten-free! Contini has a fairly extensive menu for gluten-intolerant diners, including gluten-free bread and three Primi Piatti (main courses) that are gluten-free.
If you can’t get past a good pizza or pasta, then be safe in the knowledge that their full range of pizzas can be made with gluten-free bases and two of the pastas are also gluten-free. On to desserts and there are four GF options to choose from as well as a delectable selection of gelati that is made fresh, each day.

Tex Mex II
There is a very decent reason why the logo of TexMex ll is a slice of watermelon; it looks like the smile on the face of a customer that has just enjoyed one of their legendary margaritas!
The cornerstone of the menu is fresh ingredients that are freshly prepared and TexMex ll are happy to make substitutions so that it works for the gluten-intolerant guest. It’s great to see that they don’t just offer the usual fajitas/burritos/burgers with beautiful dishes such as Ceviche Pacifico that is brimming with fresh scallops, shrimp and fish with a sharp chilli, lime and coriander marinade. Like it says on the menu: eat well, feel well, be well.
